Purpose

To create a clean, analysis-ready country-year dataset linking economic growth, poverty, education, employment, health, and digital access across countries and regions.

Source Datasets & Licences

Primary source: World Bank Open Data and selected World Bank development indicators.

World Bank datasets are generally available under CC BY 4.0, subject to applicable additional terms. The final dataset will include a source register, retrieval dates, indicator codes, transformations, and prescribed citation.

What You Will Learn

  • Retrieving public indicators from official data portals
  • Cleaning and standardising country-year data
  • Harmonising country codes and indicator names
  • Managing missing data and documentation
  • Building reproducible data-preparation workflows
  • Creating codebooks and provenance records

Expected Tasks

Participants may be assigned to:

  • Extract assigned indicators
  • Review indicator definitions and metadata
  • Standardise country names and codes
  • Check duplicate records and missing values
  • Support merging and validation
  • Prepare variable labels and documentation
  • Conduct final quality-assurance checks

Timeline & Weekly Commitment

  • Week 1: Orientation, source review, task allocation, and data extraction
  • Week 2: Cleaning, standardisation, and harmonisation
  • Week 3: Merging, validation, and documentation
  • Week 4: Quality review, final dataset preparation, and presentation

Expected commitment: 4–6 hours per week.

Fee & What It Covers

Your $20 participation fee covers project coordination, guided orientation, task allocation, data resources, quality review, documentation templates, contributor management, and a certificate for qualifying participants.

Contributor Recognition Requirements

To qualify for a verified DataLab Contributor Profile and project recognition, you must:

  • Attend orientation or review the full onboarding materials
  • Complete assigned tasks by agreed deadlines
  • Submit work that meets DataLab quality standards
  • Respond to reasonable review and correction requests
  • Follow project rules and source-data conditions

Project Rules & Consent

This project uses public-source data. Participants must follow all applicable source licences, cite original sources, and not misrepresent DataLab work as their individual work. Payment grants participation access; contributor recognition is earned through completed and approved work.
