Purpose

To create a harmonised country-year dataset for studying food production, crop yields, agricultural land, nutrition, population, and development trends across the world.

Source Datasets & Licences

Primary sources: FAOSTAT and selected World Bank indicators.

FAOSTAT statistical databases are available under CC BY 4.0 with attribution requirements. The project dataset will document the exact FAOSTAT domains, World Bank indicators, dates retrieved, and every DataLab transformation.

What You Will Learn

  • Working with agriculture and food-security data
  • Selecting indicators for a research question
  • Harmonising units, years, countries, and variable names
  • Checking data completeness and comparability
  • Preparing panel datasets for research and visualisation
  • Writing clear methodology and limitation notes

Expected Tasks

Participants may be assigned to:

  • Extract crop-production, yield, food-supply, or agriculture indicators
  • Standardise measurement units and time periods
  • Map countries to international codes
  • Identify missing or inconsistent observations
  • Merge data into the master panel
  • Draft data dictionary entries and source citations
  • Validate final outputs against original source files

Timeline & Weekly Commitment

  • Week 1: Orientation, indicator allocation, and source extraction
  • Week 2: Cleaning, unit checks, and country harmonisation
  • Week 3: Merging, validation, and gap review
  • Week 4: Documentation, quality assurance, and final release preparation

Expected commitment: 4–6 hours per week.
