Purpose

To develop an Africa-focused dataset for analysing food production, nutrition, agricultural performance, climate-related indicators, and development trends across African countries.

Source Datasets & Licences

Primary sources: FAOSTAT and selected World Bank development indicators, filtered and documented for African countries.

FAOSTAT data is provided under CC BY 4.0 with attribution requirements. World Bank datasets are generally available under CC BY 4.0 with applicable additional terms. The final package will retain full source attribution and a project-specific provenance table.

What You Will Learn

  • Building a regional dataset from global sources
  • Defining and validating an Africa-country coverage list
  • Working with food security and agriculture indicators
  • Identifying cross-country comparability issues
  • Preparing map-ready and panel-data files
  • Writing regional data documentation and limitations

Expected Tasks

Participants may be assigned to:

  • Define and verify the country coverage list
  • Extract and filter source indicators
  • Review country names, codes, and regional groupings
  • Clean and merge agriculture, food, and development data
  • Validate country-year coverage
  • Prepare map-ready fields and documentation
  • Support quality assurance and final codebook review

Timeline & Weekly Commitment

  • Week 1: Orientation, scope confirmation, country allocation, and extraction
  • Week 2: Cleaning and regional harmonisation
  • Week 3: Merging, coverage checks, and validation
  • Week 4: Documentation, quality assurance, and final presentation

Expected commitment: 4–6 hours per week.

Fee & What It Covers

Your $25 participation fee covers project leadership, guided data workflow, quality review, contributor management, certificates for qualifying participants, and access to project materials.

Contributor Recognition Requirements

You must complete approved work, follow the project schedule, document your contribution, and meet DataLab quality requirements to be recognised on the completed project.

Project Rules & Consent

Participants must maintain accurate source attribution and not remove licence or provenance information. Recognition is based on verified contribution, not payment alone.
